I always thought of drop designs as being a single teardrop on a French hook, but I recently discovered a whole series of funky amber drop earrings that are not like all the rest. The pair I found had a piece of square green amber at the top, then a little chain and a rectangular shaped silver box with a round amber bead suspending in the box. Very cool and modern and priced reasonably under $60. The green is subtle with a hint of yellow, not the usual honey yellow but close to a lemon color.
The second item I fell in love with was a very chic hoop with a single amber bead. Sounds simple, but the effect is stunning because the bead is large enough to clearly see the fossil in the gem. The hoops are sterling silver and priced at just under $85.
Perhaps the best of all are a pair of dangle chandelier earrings that have a first dangle with a deep green gemstone and then a second layer with about 3 deep bright, almost orange amber pebbles. These are longer than most simple pairs of drops but for eveningwear are exquisite, perhaps they will rest just above the shoulders, ideal with a strapless bodice. These are really cheap, retailing for just under $40.
I also saw a pair that I wanted to recommend as casual earrings until I saw the price and realized they were the most expensive ones of all the drop earrings I had seen so far. They’re not elegant but have a funky style that incorporates a triangular cut piece of amber at the top from which dangle chains, very ordinary chains in normal links, but at different levels the chains have shaped amber pieces attached that jingle and jangle. The shapes are strange, like little chili peppers in golden amber and yellowish arrowheads. As I said, they’re not elegant, but very funky for casual wear. It’s unfortunate that they cost almost $113, but perhaps that’s due to the quality of the amber. I noticed that each little amber shape is really translucent, almost totally transparent and the color is vivid.
Now For Matching Bracelets
A silver amber bracelet to match the first earrings would be a stunning 4 cabochon design with a lemon yellow, a darker yellow and two deeper green gems in a delicate chain setting. Unfortunately the bracelets that have several stones instead of just two like earrings are often more expensive. In this case the bracelet costs almost $140, so the set will end up being about $200.
The second chandelier drop earring design could be paired with an amber cuff bracelet that has a similar antique finish and is very elegant for evening wear. Again, I fear that it costs about $200, so the set will be $240.
The third casual earrings can be matched with a simple bracelet in silver that has a series of pointed shaped cabochons, but very similar to the shape and color of the earrings. The best part is that while the earrings are pricy, the bracelet is affordable at just $63, making the total set come to $173. (Some of the pieces mentioned can be found at JeGem)
